Christmas in the Desert

This year for the holidays my family choose to opt out of traditional Christmas festivities and instead put our money towards a trip to Palm Springs. It truly ended up being the greatest gift and led to an incredibly stress free, relaxing holiday in comparison to the alternative.

We spent the majority of our time sitting in the sun, reading books, playing cards and naturally, drinking margaritas. As far as vacation destinations go, Palm Springs is great for anyone seeking a low key getaway. You have multiple options for exploring and taking in the sites and/or lounging all day long by the pool and not feeling guilty about it what-so-ever.

If you do prefer to keep yourself busy, here are a few of my favourite things to do in Palm Springs.

  • Hiking and Bike Trails

Since Palm Springs is sheltered by the San Bernardino Mountains, there are a number of hiking and bike trails. The trails offer different routes depending on your skill level but the majority of them are fine for beginners or intermediate hikers.

  • Shop Vintage on Palm Canyon Drive

Palm Canyon Drive is full of vintage shops and unique boutiques. It's also a great place to walk around and explore. If you're a fan of old school movies, this area of Palm Springs is wrought with classic Hollywood vibes from the 50's and 60's.

Think farmers market on steroids - this night market, otherwise known as, Village-fest, starts around 6:00pm on Thursday nights where you'll find street vendors, performers and artists with endless creations on display. Not to mention incredible smelling street food.  All of the regular stores also stay open late, so there are plenty of shopping options to choose from.

I wasn't able to check this one off my list this time but a number of people have suggested it as a must do. Especially if it's for a girls trip!

  • Cabazon Outlet Malls

If you're an avid shopper the Cabazon outlet mall is the best place to find deals. I travelled to Palm Springs once before this trip and bought my favourite Marc Jacobs bag here at a discounted price. Head to Sacks Off Fifth first as they have the best deals on almost all of the brands you'll find throughout the mall.

  • "Look" shopping at El Paseo

This street is similar to Robson Street in Vancouver in that the majority of its stores are designer and way out of my price range. But the street itself is stunning and so worth taking a walk through. If you hit El Paseo at the right time, you might also see a number of classic sports cars touring up and down the strip which adds a bit more excitement. I recommend going mid-evening so you can also see the trees light up along the street at dark.

Last but not least, Joshua Tree National park is only an hour or so away from Palm Springs and is a must see if you're at all inclined to stunning natural landscapes. It deserves it's own blog post so that's what I will be sharing next!
